The Nokia D1C is a 13.8-inch tablet, reveals GFXBench

Earlier this month a Nokia device code-named D1C surfaced on Geekbench and AnTuTu revealing key specifications, but did not reveal its screen size, leading to speculation that it was a smartphone. However, a new benchmark listing on GFXBench suggests that Nokia D1C is a Android tablet, and not a smartphone.

The listing on GFXBench reveals that Nokia D1C will have a 13.8-inch display with Full HD or 1080p resolution. The tablet will be powered by 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm processor, which could be Snapdragon 430 or Snapdragon 435 chip.

It will have 3GB RAM, 16GB inbuilt storage (9GB available to user, 16MP rear camera and 8MP front facing camera. The tablet will run Android 7.0 Nougat.

Most of specs revealed by GFXBench are in line with AnTuTu and Geekbench, expect the storage which was 32GB, indicating the Nokia D1C will come with two storage options.

Nokia has already confirmed that it will come to the market with new Android powered tablet and smartphones in Q4 2016, which has already begun. However, the devices will hit the market in early 2017.

If real, Nokia D1C will be Nokia's second Android tablet after the Nokia N1. Interestingly the Nokia N1 tablet was unveiled in November 2014, which is almost two years ago, so we can expect Nokia to announce its new devices anytime soon.

Google to release two Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches in Q1 2017

Back in July, 2016, a report suggested that Google was working on two Android Wear smartwatches codenamed Angelfish and Swordfish. We've already seen the renders of these smartwatches and now Evan Blass has shared new details of Google's smartwatches.

According to Blass Google will introduce the smartwatches sometime in the first quarter of 2017. He also mentioned that these smartwatches will be powered by Android Wear 2.0, which is Google's platform for wearables. Android Wear 2.0 will feature its own app store and an improved Smart Reply feature.

As per earlier reports, the smartwatches will have Google Assistant integration for contextual alerts. The Angelfish will be the larger of the duo, with a 42.5mm dial and have three hardware buttons for control. It will also feature heart rate sensor, GPS and LTE cellular connectivity.

The Swordfish will have a smaller 42mm dial with single button control and supports Android Wear MODE watch bands. However, it will not have support for heart rate sensor, GPS or LTE connectivity.

We can expect more details regarding Google's upcoming smartwatches in the coming week.

Unboxing / Accessories

The Y55 box highlighting its screen flash feature

The Y55 comes with the same familiar packaging found with most Vivo phones, though this time, the company highlighted its "screen flash" ability for better selfies in the dark.

Inclusions found inside
Inclusions found inside

Inside the box, you'll find a regular 1A regular USB wall charger, USB to micro USB charging / data cables, earbuds with microphone for calls / music, SIM ejector tool, and a good type of clear TPU case. There's also a there's a there's a pre-attached glass looking screen protector on top. It's a pretty nice start-up package overall, good job Vivo!

Build Quality / Design

It is very rare to see a handset with this level of craftsmanship at this price point. The handset loads with a super slim and tough metal unibody that's well machined all over. On top, Vivo failed to indicate if the phone has Gorilla Glass protection to prevent scratches. Fortunately, like what we stated above, there's a layer of screen protection that's already pre-installed.

The way Vivo constructed this phone is spectacular!

We think that this is a masterpiece for an entry-midrange handset as it is rare to find to see a device that looks this simple, slim yet beautiful in terms of aesthetics. It has gorgeous curves on the corners, back, and even in front. There's also a nice type of chrome paint finish found on the middle-side part of the device.

It's style is good enough to impress even picky individuals!

Ergonomically, it has a near premium feel. The phone doesn't have much heft and its curvy finish makes it nice to hold as a whole. However, the screen protector part has some sort of sharpness in its corners that's really noticeable.

All its ports and button placements we're standard and it even has a dedicated micro SD card slot up to 128 GB.

Initial findings

1. It's 5.2 inch HD screen with 2.5D curved glass has punch, fun, and warm colors. It would have been better if its sharper, but I cannot really complain that much considering its price.

2. The level of craftsmanship is amazing at this price point

3. This is the first budget Vivo phone that runs on a speedy and powerful Snapdragon 430 chip paired with Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS. So far, we find it very snappy considering that this is an affordable phone.

4. The main camera and selfie looks decent in daylight for the price, but we'll need more tested to accurately comment on its quality.

5. It has OTG and LED notification.

As of the moment

This phone is shaping up to be a winner for Vivo. This is their first phone with this type of great specs for the price which made it promising as a whole. Initially, we feel that this can compete or even outclass some of the other popular sub-8K phone that's readily available in the Philippine market today.

Hopefully, we can do a full review in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!

Airtel launches 100Mbps V-Fiber broadband service

Airtel has launched its new V-Fiber broadband service in Chennai, which offers speeds up to 10Mbps. The new fixed wireline broadband is based on vectorisation, which is Europe's number one fixed broad technology. Airtel claims to be first operator in India to use this technology.

The teleco says it has upgraded local exchanges with equipment to handle fiber speeds. It also said that V-Fiber broadband service does not require new wiring or drilling in a users house, instead works on the existing Airtel broadband wireline. However, a new modem upgrade is required.

Existing Aitel broadband users can upgrade to V-Fiber service with their current plan and enjoy high-speed data at no extra monthly cost. In case  users are not happy with the new service, within the first month, Airtel will refund the new modem charges and the amount will be adjusted in their next billing cycle. For new broadband connections, Airtel is offering unlimited three month trial offer with 100mbps speed.

In addition Airtel also announced that unlimited free calling that was earlier available with select broadband plans has now been extended to all subscribers. Users can now make free unlimited voice calls to any networks across the country with any broadband plan they have. Earlier Airtel started offering myHome rewards, under which users can avail additional data of 5GB/month for every other Airtel connection they have in the home, be it postpaid mobile or DTH.

Airtel's V-Fiber service is part of the company's nationwide network trasnformative initiative called Project Leap. The service is currently live in Chennai, and will launch in Delhi & NCR and Bengaluru in the coming weeks. It will also be deployed across 87 cities across the country soon.

To apply for a new V-Fiber broadband connection or request an upgrade to your existing connection you can visit airtel.in/vfiber.

Samsung to reportedly kill Note brand forever

Samsung has permanently halted production and discontinued the Galaxy Note7. Now according to a report coming out of Russia, Samsung is planning to drop the Note branding from any future smartphone.

The report citing anonymous source inside Samsung's Russian operations, also claims that Samsung is concerned that the reputation of the Note series has been tarnished after multiple reports of Galaxy Note7 battery explosion incidents that damaged several units of Note7.

Furthermore, Samsung also conducted a survey across various markets including South Korea where, 50 percent of the participants showed negative attitude towards the Note branding.

However, Samsung will not get rid of Galaxy branding, as this would mean a full-scale re-branding of its entire smartphone portfolio.

Samsung introduced the Note series back in 2011, with the Galaxy Note, and it was the first smartphone to sport a 5-inch display (5.3-inch).
